Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Bill 2020 approved

ISLAMABAD: The Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Amendment Bill 2020 has been approved all across the Federal Capital, the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice.

The bill aimed to protect and secure the rights of ownership and possession of women in properties, received a majority vote, in a meeting presided over by Muhammad Javed Abbasi.

The Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Act, 2020, states that

  • The Ombudsman not only has the power to receive complaints of women deprived of ownership or possession of properties but also ensure implementation by directing the police and district administration officials to restore possession and title of the property to the complainant.
  • No court or ruling authority can grant a stay or interim order, to question the validity of the orders passed by the Ombudsman.
  • The Deputy Commissioner will conduct an inquiry and submit a report to the Ombudsman within 15 days since the complaint is registered.
  • The ombudsman shall pass corrective orders, within 60 days of receipt of the complaint, under the law and direct the Deputy Commissioner or any state functionary including the police to restore the possession or ownership.
  • A complaint can be registered by a woman deprived of her rights, an NGO, or any of her representatives to the Ombudsman to take a suo moto notice.

Relevant officials of the Ministry of Law and Justice and Ministry of Religious Affairs were among the attendees of the meeting.
